Psychological trauma is a painful, emotional wound that often has long-lasting effects.
A single experience or series of events that cause moderate to severe stress reactions is considered to be a traumatic event.
Any traumatic event resulting in exposure to an extreme level of stress can lead to the development of an anxiety disorder known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). While not everyone who has been exposed to a traumatic event develops this condition, many experience common symptoms of the disorder, such as sleep disturbances, problems with concentration, flashbacks, and angry outbursts.
Examples of traumatic events the majority of our clients have experienced are:
- Violent crime, including child abuse.
- Sudden and unexpected death of a loved one.
- Military service/combat.
- Work-related stress experienced by law enforcement and other first responders.
- Vehicle crashes, work-related accidents, and other unexpected incidents.
